Start Charging via EVSE-ID or QR Code

Charging

Updated this week

Welcome to the Help Center! In this article, you'll learn how to reliably start a charging session even if a charging station isn't displayed correctly in the StromNow app – simply by using the EVSE-ID or the QR code directly on the station.

🚀 Why EVSE-ID or QR Code?

In rare cases, a charging station may not be correctly displayed in the StromNow app or a technical issue may occur. For these situations, we've built in an easy alternative: Start charging manually via EVSE-ID or QR code.

🔍 Where can I find the EVSE-ID or QR code?

The EVSE-ID (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Identifier) is the unique ID for each charging connector – like a license plate for chargers.

You’ll typically find it:

  • directly on a sticker near the plug

  • next to the QR code, in a format like DE*ABC*123456*001

  • sometimes printed on a metal plate above the connector

The QR code is usually placed right next to the EVSE-ID and contains the same information digitally.

📱 How to start charging using EVSE-ID or QR Code

  1. Open the StromNow app and go to the Charge Map section

  2. Tap the lightning icon ⚡️ at the top left

  3. Select "Scan to Charge" via the green button at the bottom

  4. Now you have two options:

    • Scan the QR code: Open your camera and scan the code on the charger

    • Manually enter the EVSE-ID: Type the identifier into the input field

  5. Once detected, you can confirm and start charging as usual via the slide button.

🧠 Good to know

  • The EVSE-ID is standardized across providers and allows you to charge at thousands of stations across Europe.

  • Even if a station doesn't appear in the app, you can still use it by entering the EVSE-ID.

  • Make sure to type the ID exactly as shown, including symbols like * or capital letters.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What if the QR code is damaged?
No worries! Just enter the EVSE-ID manually – it's printed right next to the QR code.

2. Does this work at every station?
Yes – as long as the charging station supports roaming and is part of our network.

3. Do I need to activate anything first?
No – this feature is available by default in every version of the StromNow app.

✅ Conclusion

If a charging station doesn’t show up properly in the app, there’s no need to stress.
With the EVSE-ID or QR code, you’re always able to start charging – anytime, anywhere. 🔋⚡️
