With Smart Charging, you no longer have to decide for yourself when the best time is to charge your EV.
Simply set when your vehicle needs to be ready and what battery level you want to reach. StromNow takes available electricity prices into account and automatically schedules your charging session during suitable, lower-cost periods.
This makes charging your EV at home more convenient and – especially with a dynamic electricity tariff – potentially more affordable.
How does Smart Charging work?
Electricity prices can vary significantly throughout the day. Especially with a dynamic electricity tariff, it can make a difference whether your vehicle charges in the early evening or a few hours later.
Smart Charging takes care of this planning for you.
You simply tell StromNow:
when your vehicle needs to be ready
what battery level you want to reach by then
StromNow then identifies suitable charging times and schedules your charging session during lower-cost electricity price periods whenever possible.
Your target battery level and desired departure time always form the basis of the charging plan.
What do I need for Smart Charging?
To use Smart Charging, you need:
a compatible EV connected to StromNow
a compatible wallbox connected to StromNow
your Home Charging settings configured in the StromNow app
You can also add your own electricity tariff in StromNow.
You can choose between a dynamic electricity tariff and a fixed electricity price.
Set up Smart Charging
1. Connect your vehicle
First, connect your compatible EV to StromNow.
This allows StromNow to take relevant vehicle data, such as your current battery level, into account.
2. Connect your wallbox
Next, connect your compatible wallbox to StromNow.
Together, your vehicle and wallbox provide the basis for StromNow to intelligently plan and manage your charging session.
3. Add your electricity tariff
Add your electricity tariff in the Home section.
You can choose between a dynamic tariff and a fixed electricity price.
With a dynamic tariff, electricity prices can change throughout the day. This creates different price periods that Smart Charging can take into account when planning your charging session.
4. Set your departure time
Choose when your vehicle needs to be ready.
For example:
Departure at 8:00 AM.
5. Choose your target battery level
Set the battery level you want your vehicle to reach before departure.
For example:
80% by 8:00 AM.
6. Activate Smart Charging
Based on your settings and the available electricity price data, StromNow creates a suitable charging plan.
Instead of fully charging your vehicle immediately after plugging it in, the charging session can be shifted to lower-cost periods.
A simple example
You arrive home at 6:00 PM and connect your vehicle to your wallbox.
Your car needs to be ready the next morning at 8:00 AM with an 80% battery level.
If electricity is more expensive in the evening and cheaper during the night, StromNow can schedule the actual charging session for the lower-cost period.
You don't need to monitor electricity prices yourself or start charging manually during the night.
Smart Charging handles the planning for you.
Electricity prices and forecasts in StromNow
In the Home section, you can view current electricity price trends.
StromNow also shows price forecasts for the following day. This allows you to see which periods are expected to be cheaper or more expensive and better understand how your Smart Charging plan is created.
This is especially useful if you have a dynamic electricity tariff.
What are the benefits of Smart Charging?
Smart Charging connects your vehicle, wallbox, and electricity prices and takes much of the charging planning off your hands.
The main benefits include:
automatically shifting charging to lower-cost periods
potentially reducing your charging costs
taking your departure time and target battery level into account
no need to constantly monitor electricity prices yourself
making better use of dynamic electricity tariffs
connecting your vehicle and wallbox through StromNow
managing your charging plan directly in one app
Does Smart Charging also work with a fixed electricity price?
You can also add a fixed electricity price in StromNow.
However, the biggest cost-saving potential of Smart Charging comes from tariffs where electricity prices vary depending on the time of day.
With a fixed electricity price, you generally pay the same stored price for the electricity you use, regardless of when your vehicle charges.
Does Smart Charging always save money?
Smart Charging can help you take advantage of lower-cost charging periods, especially with a dynamic electricity tariff.
However, the actual savings depend on factors such as your electricity tariff, electricity price developments, your charging needs, and the amount of time available before your next departure.
A specific level of savings therefore cannot be guaranteed.
Automatic charging – ready when you need it
The goal of Smart Charging is simple:
You decide when you want to leave and how full your battery should be. StromNow takes care of intelligently planning the charging session.
This makes charging at home easier, more automated, and better aligned with your electricity tariff.
