Welcome to the Help Center! In this article, you’ll learn how to safely and reliably stop your EV charging session — using the StromNow app, your StromNow charging card, or directly through your vehicle.
Three ways to stop a charging session
1. Via the StromNow app
The easiest way to stop a charging session is directly in the StromNow app.
Open the app while a charging session is active.
On the home screen, you will see the live view of your current charging session, including the charging time.
To stop the charging session, move the “Stop Charging” slider to the left.
This will end the charging session directly in our system.
In many cases, you will then see a confirmation in the app that the charging session has been stopped successfully.
Important: Whether a charging session can be stopped directly via the app depends on whether the charging station supports remote control. The app clearly shows whether this function is available for your current charging session.
If the display in the app is delayed for technical reasons, there is no need to worry: billing stops from the moment the charging session is actually ended — not only when the display is updated.
2. With the StromNow charging card
If you started the charging session with your StromNow charging card, you can also stop it the same way.
Hold your StromNow charging card against the card reader of the charging station where you started the session.
After successful authentication, the charging session will stop automatically.
Once the stop has been confirmed — usually by an acoustic signal or a message on the charging station display — you can remove the charging cable.
At some charging stations, the cable will only unlock after scanning the card again. This is normal and depends on the provider.
Important: You must use the same card that was used to start the charging session.
3. Directly through your vehicle
Many EVs also allow you to stop the charging session directly through the vehicle — without using the app or charging card.
This is especially helpful if there are delays or connection issues at the charging station.
Make sure your vehicle is unlocked.
Find the unlock button for the charging port or in the vehicle cockpit. The exact location depends on the vehicle model.
Press the button to unlock the connector.
Then remove the connector from the vehicle.
As soon as the connector is unplugged from the vehicle, the charging session is technically ended.
From that moment on, no further charging costs will apply — even if the app only shows the update a little later.
Good to know: This method works with almost all providers and is especially useful if stopping the session via the app or charging card does not work as expected.
What happens after the charging session is stopped?
As soon as the charging session has been ended using one of the methods above, billing also stops.
No further charges will apply, even if the app shows the end of the session with a delay.
Please note: Depending on the provider, it may take a little time for the charging station to transmit the session data to our system. This means it can take a few minutes until the charging session is shown as completed in the app.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Do I need to confirm the stop in the app as well?
No. As soon as you unplug the connector or stop the charging session via the app, card, or vehicle, the charging session is complete.
The app may update with a short delay, but billing stops immediately once the charging session has actually ended.
2. What if the charging session is still not shown as ended in the app?
This can happen and is usually related to the synchronization of session data with the charging station operator.
In this case, you do not need to do anything else. If you are still unsure, feel free to contact our support team.
