Ending Your Charging Session Safely – Your Options with StromNow

In this article, you'll learn how to safely and effectively stop your EV charging session — using the StromNow app, the StromNow charging card, or directly via your vehicle.


Three Ways to Stop a Charging Session:

1. 📱 Via the StromNow App

The easiest way to stop a charging session is directly via the StromNow app on your smartphone.

  • Open the app during an active charging session.

  • On the home screen, you'll see a live view of your current session, including charging time.

  • To stop the session, swipe the "Stop Charging" slider to the left. This ends the session immediately in our system.

In many cases, you’ll receive a confirmation in the app that the session was successfully stopped.

🔍 Note: Whether a session can be stopped via the app depends on whether the charging station supports remote control. The app clearly shows if this feature is available for your current session.

If there’s a delay in display due to technical reasons, don’t worry — billing stops at the moment the session ends, not when the display updates.


2. 💳 Using the StromNow Charging Card

If you started the charging session with your StromNow card, you can also end it easily — without using the app or your car’s menu:

  • Hold your StromNow card again to the card reader on the same charging station where you started the session.

  • After successful authentication, the session will be stopped automatically.

  • Once the session ends (usually indicated by a beep or a message on the station’s display), you can unplug the charging cable from the station.

Some stations only unlock the cable after scanning the card again — this is normal and depends on the operator.

⚠️ You must use the same card that was used to start the session.


3. 🚗 Directly via Your Vehicle

Many electric vehicles offer the option to end the session directly through the car — without needing the app or a charging card. This is especially helpful if the station has a delay or connectivity issue.

Important: Your vehicle must be unlocked in order to remove the charging plug.

  • Locate the unlock button near the charging port or in the vehicle cockpit (depending on your car model).

  • Press the button — this unlocks the plug so it can be removed.

  • As soon as the plug is pulled out, the charging session is technically ended.

From that moment on, no further costs will be incurred, even if the session still appears active in the app for a short time.

💡 This method works with almost all providers and is especially useful when ending the session via app or card is not possible.


What Happens After Ending the Session?

From the moment a session is stopped using any of the above methods, billing stops immediately.

No further fees will be charged, even if the session still appears active in the app due to a delay.

Please note: It may take a few minutes for the session data to appear updated in the app, depending on the charging station operator's data transfer speed.

1. Do I need to confirm the end of the session in the app afterwards?
No. As soon as you've unplugged the cable or stopped the session via card or vehicle, the session is over. The display in the app might take some time to update, but billing stops immediately at the physical end.

2. What if the session still appears active in the app?
This is normal and caused by delayed synchronization with the station operator. You don't need to do anything. If you're unsure, feel free to contact our support team.
